About GhAMa

Our Mission

• Promote greater knowledge and understanding of Ghanaian culture and people through social, educational, cultural and recreational activities.
• Promote social, economic and educational activities for the welfare of its members.
• Co-operate with other organizations with similar objectives, and foster friendly relations with the community.
• Assist developmental efforts in Ghana.
• Provide resources and support to members in time of need.
• Serve as advocate for developing appropriate connections through networking that benefit both Ghanaian and American interest.

History of GhAMa

GhAMa was established in 2006 after several attempts in the 70s, 80s and 90s to establish an organization for Ghanaians living in Madison and its environs. During the first quarter of 2006, efforts to re-establish a Ghanaian Organization to cater for the ever-increasing population of Ghanaians in Madison were renewed.

On March 11, 2006, a party organized by Dr. Joe Brewoo at his residence to commemorate Ghana's 49th Independence Anniversary became more of a general meeting. The meeting led to the discussion and adoption of a constitution. A seven-member Board of Directors was also elected at the meeting to develop programs and set up administrative machinery to ensure the smooth running of the new Ghana Association of Madison, Inc. (GHAMA).

The Association was incorporated and granted a not-for-profit non-stock corporate certification by the State of Wisconsin on April 12, 2006. The official inauguration of the Association was held at the Eagle Heights Community Centre on November 11, 2006. In attendance to support GHAMA were representatives from the Ghana National Council of Chicago, African Association of Madison Inc, various African National Organizations as well as the general Madison public and guests from out of town.

Within a year of its existence, GHAMA under the leadership of the Board of Directors organized one of the largest gatherings at the Eagle Heights Community Center to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Ghana’s Independence. The Association raised funds during the Golden Jubilee celebrations to support the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana Police.

GHAMA continues to develop programs to support Ghanaians in Madison, its environs and in GHANA.
